Rally Against Grad Tax Hikes 11/29

No automatic alt text available.

The Republican tax plan would be absolutely devastating for grad students. Categorizing tuition waivers as taxable income—while also ending many important tax waivers—is an attack on our livelihoods and an attack on the accessibility of higher education to low income students, women, LGBQT students, disabled students, and students of color.

Grad students from Syracuse University will rally together to condemn this proposal and all that it represents. We will further call on our institutions to commit to concrete contingency plans in case the Republican senate prevails in passing this harmful legislation.

The Precarity of Inclusion and (Be)longing: The Experiences of Incarcerated and Refugee/Asylum-Seeking Youth in Schools 10/19

Featuring Panelists: Valentina Migliarini, Aly Wane, and Janet B. Flores
When: Thursday, October 19, 2017 @ 4:30 p.m.
Where: Shemin Auditorium, Shaffer Art Building, Syracuse University

Urban schools are experiencing increasing numbers of students from immigrant & refugee backgrounds. Students of color, those with disabilities, and English language learners are all at an increased risk in relation to the school-to-prison pipeline. Academically these students are also at a disadvantage because of low teacher expectations, ability tracking, educational barriers, segregated educational placements, and anti-immigrant bias. This panel presentation will explore how schools can better support immigrant, refugee, & asylum seeking youth & their families.
